CHELSEA HOUSE: London
Chelsea House is about maximizing natural light throughout the house, but especially at lower levels.
The main design idea for Chelsea House was to reintroduce a first floor that had been removed by a previous owner.
We decided we could both bring light to the floor below and have the use of a new ground floor level as well.
We have introduced a new floor with two large cuts in the wood that are covered with glass panels.
This allows the light from the large ground floor windows to reach the basement level (minus one).
In order to increase the light we also unified front and back rooms on the ground floor, and opened up the back windows into a new folding sliding door that leads to an outside terrace.
The kitchen area has been extended under a new glass roof so as to make it both as large and as full of light as possible.
In terms of the interior, it was designed knowing exactly which items of furniture were to be included in the house.
Many of these items were in the private collection of the client.
It was a collaborative project between client, architect and builder.
Many of the best residential projects are collaborations between designers and a client with a vision.
